How to Protect Your Family at Home

Unfortunately in today’s society crime and violence have become commonplace so how do you protect your family and keep them safe?

protect your familyMost people regard their home as a safe sanctuary but is it really safe and have you taken every precaution to protect your family at home? Ensuring your home is secure and safe for your family should be a high priority.

Burglary is one of the most common threats we have to deal with, so don’t make it easy for burglars to gain access to your home. Research has shown that if a burglar can’t break into your house within five minutes he will choose another target. So by adding security devices to your home you are adding that extra layer of protection and also in many cases this will reduce your insurance premiums.

Examine how easy it is to access your house, remembering if it’s harder to enter this becomes a deterrent for an intruder. Do you have security doors and solid entry doors?

Standard doors can be easily kicked in, but metal or hardwood doors make it harder to gain access, and you need to ensure your doors have good strong frames. It doesn’t matter if you have the best lock on the market if the door is weak. It’s also a good idea to fit a peep hole to your door, this way you can always check who is outside before opening the door.

If you have sliding glass doors a simple trick is to put a piece of dowel or wood in the door track so even if the lock is broken they can’t be slid open from the outside.  Have screen doors fitted to your external doors and windows, its well worth paying a bit extra to buy security screens that are reinforced and are lockable. It’s important to remember security screen and or locks on your windows are just as important as doors, as they equally provide an opportunity to gain entry to your house.

Another thing to check is the quality of your locks, cheap locks are child’s play to an intruder, and don’t think safety chains will protect you – they won’t. Invest in good quality locks and or deadbolts. Deadbolts are good value for money and add that extra measure of security to protect your family.

If you have just moved into a new home it’s a good idea to either replace your locks or have them re-keyed, after all you don’t know for certain just who has previously had access or had a key.

A more recent innovation in home security is the fitting of keypads this ensures only people who have the key code number can gain access.
If you have windows that are level with the street or a fire escape outside you may want to consider fitting metal gates as a further deterrent.

Don’t leave expensive items on display that’s like window shopping for a burglar.

One of the benefits of today’s technology is that you can now buy motion detector lights and video surveillance cameras without breaking the bank, and for a few dollars isn’t your peace of mind worth that extra outlay? These systems can be installed and setup to record any infringement on your property whether you are at home or away.

There are many ways to set up surveillance systems, depending on whether you want to just secure your home or the boundaries of your property.  If you are away from home you can monitor your cameras’ via the internet. It’s a good idea to have your central recording device secured so that if a burglar does get past your system they can’t destroy the evidence being recorded.

If you are willing to invest a bit more there are security firms that will setup your cameras and video surveillance and will monitor your home when you are away. If someone attempts to access your house the system triggers and an alarm is sounded which alerts the security company to the breach.

Motion sensor lights are another great security feature and having them at the front back and sides of your home ensures any approach will activate them. Make sure they are located high enough so that any would be burglar can’t simply break them or turn them off.

If you have valuables on your property have a good safe installed, preferably somewhere inconspicuous that won’t be too easily noticed.

One alternate solution to securing your home that many people overlook is to have a guard dog or even a family dog as animals are far more sensitive to noises and intruders that people. Sometimes just the dog barking is enough to deter a burglar from choosing your home.

But not everyone likes pets and obviously if you live in an apartment that’s not very conducive for keeping a dog.

Whichever method you choose to protect your family it is important to know that you can have peace of mind knowing you have taken the necessary steps to protect your home environment from intruders or burglars.
